Tonga Entry Requirements
Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Tonga operates a visa-on-arrival system for most nationalities, granting visitor permits at the port of entry. Citizens of most countries can stay for up to 31 days without obtaining a visa in advance, though all visitors must meet standard entry requirements including proof of onward travel and sufficient funds.
Citizens of most countries receive a visitor permit upon arrival without prior visa application
Visitor permit is granted free of charge at the port of entry. Travelers must show confirmed onward or return tickets, proof of accommodation, and evidence of sufficient funds (approximately TOP $500 or equivalent per person). Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay. Extensions up to 6 months total stay are possible through the Immigration Division.
Some nationalities must obtain a visa before traveling to Tonga
Citizens of countries without visa-free agreements should contact the Tongan Immigration Division or nearest Tongan embassy well in advance of travel. Some nationalities from countries with higher immigration risks may require additional documentation or security clearances.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival at Fua'amotu International Airport or any port of entry in Tonga, travelers will proceed through immigration and customs. The process is generally straightforward, but being prepared with all required documentation will ensure smooth entry.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Tonga has strict customs and biosecurity regulations to protect its agriculture, environment, and economy. All travelers must complete a customs declaration form and may be subject to baggage inspection. Tonga's biosecurity officers are particularly vigilant about food products, plants, and animal materials. Penalties for non-declaration or attempting to bring in prohibited items can be severe, including fines and prosecution.
Prohibited Items
- Fresh fruits and vegetables - strict biosecurity risk
- Meat and meat products (including dried, canned, or processed) - biosecurity protection
- Dairy products - disease prevention
- Live plants, seeds, and plant materials - agricultural protection
- Live animals, birds, and insects - biosecurity control
- Soil and items with soil attached - disease and pest prevention
- Illegal drugs and narcotics - criminal prohibition
- Weapons and firearms (without proper permits) - security control
- Pornographic materials - cultural and legal prohibition
- Counterfeit goods - intellectual property protection
- Endangered species products - CITES compliance
Restricted Items
- Prescription medications - must be in original packaging with prescription; carry only reasonable quantities for personal use
- Firearms and ammunition - require import permit from Tonga Police; must be declared and licensed
- Pets and animals - require import permit, health certificates, and quarantine arrangements made in advance with Ministry of Agriculture
- Commercial goods - require import licenses and proper commercial documentation
- Drones and radio equipment - may require permits from relevant authorities
- Certain foods (processed, packaged) - may be permitted with proper declaration and inspection; must be commercially sealed
- Traditional medicines - subject to inspection and approval; may require health authority clearance
Health Requirements
Tonga has minimal mandatory health requirements for entry, though certain vaccinations may be required depending on your travel history. It is strongly recommended that all travelers be up to date on routine vaccinations and consider additional protection based on planned activities.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever - required only if arriving from or transiting through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Certificate must be presented at immigration.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Routine vaccinations - ensure you are current on measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and yearly flu shot
- Hepatitis A - recommended for all travelers due to possible contaminated food or water
- Hepatitis B - recommended for travelers who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical procedures
- Typhoid - recommended for travelers eating outside major restaurants and hotels
- COVID-19 - stay updated with recommended doses per your country's guidelines
Health Insurance
Comprehensive travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Tonga has limited medical facilities, particularly for serious conditions or emergencies. The nearest advanced medical facilities are in New Zealand or Australia, and medical evacuation can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Ensure your insurance covers emergency evacuation, hospitalization, and repatriation. Some travel insurance policies exclude coverage for certain activities like scuba diving or water sports, so verify your coverage matches your planned activities.
Protect Your Trip with Travel Insurance
Comprehensive coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and 24/7 emergency assistance. Many countries recommend or require travel insurance.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport (family passports are not accepted). Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing the travel. This letter should include contact information for the parent(s), details of the trip, and the accompanying adult's information. If a child is traveling with only one parent, carry the child's birth certificate and consent letter from the other parent. In cases of sole custody, carry legal documentation. Divorced or separated parents should carry custody documents. These documents may be requested by immigration officers.
Importing pets to Tonga requires extensive advance planning and strict compliance with quarantine regulations. An import permit must be obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forests before travel. Requirements typically include: microchip identification, current rabies vaccination (but not within 30 days of travel), health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 7 days of travel, treatment for internal and external parasites, and blood tests for certain diseases. Most pets require quarantine upon arrival, with costs borne by the owner. Some animals may be prohibited entirely. Contact the Ministry of Agriculture at least 3-6 months before intended travel to begin the process. Pet import requirements are very strict and non-compliance can result in refused entry or extended quarantine.
Visitors wishing to stay longer than the initial 31-day permit can apply for extensions at the Immigration Division in Nuku'alofa. Extensions are typically granted in increments, up to a maximum total stay of 6 months in any 12-month period. To apply for an extension, visit the Immigration Division before your current permit expires. Required documents include: valid passport, completed extension application form, proof of sufficient funds for extended stay, proof of accommodation, confirmed onward ticket (may need to be for a later date), and extension fee (approximately TOP $50-200 depending on duration). Applications are usually processed within a few days. Overstaying your permit can result in fines, detention, deportation, and future entry bans. For stays longer than 6 months, you may need to apply for a different visa category such as work permit, residence permit, or special permit, which have additional requirements.
Business visitors can enter on the standard visitor permit for short business trips (meetings, conferences, negotiations). However, you cannot engage in paid employment or conduct commercial activities without proper work authorization. If planning to work, establish a business, or engage in commercial activities, you must obtain the appropriate work permit or business visa before arrival. Business travelers should carry: letter from employer detailing purpose of visit, invitation letter from Tongan business contact, business registration documents if applicable, and proof of business ties to home country. For extended business stays or employment, contact the Immigration Division well in advance.
Private vessels arriving in Tonga must clear customs and immigration at an official port of entry (Nuku'alofa, Neiafu, or Pangai). All persons aboard must remain on the vessel until clearance is completed. The vessel captain must present: crew list, passenger list, vessel registration documents, last port clearance, customs declaration, and valid passports for all aboard. Cruising permits may be required for extended stays in Tongan waters. Yachts must comply with all biosecurity regulations, and vessels may be inspected. Fees apply for clearance and cruising permits. Contact the Ports Authority and Immigration Division for current requirements and designated anchorages.
