Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children under 18 must have their own valid passport. If traveling with only one parent, with relatives, or alone, it is advisable to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian(s). This should include contact details and travel itinerary. This is not an absolute legal requirement but can prevent delays at immigration.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets (dogs, cats) is highly restricted and requires an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Forests. Pets must be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies (with valid titers), and undergo a mandatory quarantine period upon arrival. The process is lengthy and complex; start inquiries at least 6 months in advance.

Extended Stays

Visitors wishing to stay longer than their initial visa-free or visa-on-arrival period (usually 30/31 days) must apply for a visa extension at the Immigration Division headquarters in Nukuʻalofa before their current permit expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration officials and typically require a valid reason, proof of continued financial support, and a fee. For long-term stays (work, study, residency), the appropriate long-term visa must be obtained before travel.
