Transportation in Tonga

Tonga's transport is island-sized: rental cars and taxis dominate Tongatapu, while inter-island ferries and small domestic flights stitch the archipelago together. On the main island, cars are cheap and roads are quiet, good for first-timers who want to beach-hop at their own pace. In town, shared "island buses" run daylight loops for a fraction of a taxi fare. But they thin out after 5 p.m.; if you're staying out late, pre-book a ride or expect a splurge on the return trip. From Fuaʻamotu International, the only honest move is the official taxi rank, no ride-share apps operate here, and the shuttle desk often sells out. Agree the fare before you load bags. The drive to Nukuʻalofa is short but unmetered. Skip the curbside "private drivers" who quote in foreign currency, stick with the rank or arrange a hotel pickup to avoid the tourist trap.
