Unmetered taxis at Fuaʻamotu International Airport sometimes quote inflated flat fares to Nukuʻalofa instead of using the standard meter or zone rates, always ask the driver to confirm the fare before getting in or use the airport's official taxi dispatcher.
Some curbside 'porters' grab bags without invitation and then demand a large fee for the short walk to the taxi rank, politely decline assistance unless you need it and agree on a small tip beforehand.
Occasionally a tout will claim that the airport shuttle is "finished for the day" and steer travelers to a private car at several times the normal price, verify the actual shuttle schedule at the information desk inside the terminal before accepting any ride.
