Tonga sits just below the equatorial storm belt, so it never gets the full-blown cyclone months that Fiji or Samoa endure. Instead you get a classic South-Pacific wet/dry rhythm: November-April is warm, sticky and rain-prone, while May-October turns cooler, drier and less humid. Trade winds blow steadily from the south-east for roughly eight months, which keeps the air moving and the mozzies down. What surprises first-timers is how little the mercury shifts - daytime highs only swing about 9 °C through the year - but the combo of rainfall, humidity and breeze makes the same 29 °C feel either steam-room hot or pleasantly balmy. Add in that Tonga is a scattering of 170-odd islands and you'll find micro-climates: Ha'apai tends to be a touch drier, Vava'u a shade cooler, and Tongatapu the stickiest of the three main groups.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach & Relaxation
Mid-May to late September - water still 24-26 °C, skies steady, humidity low enough that your paperback doesn't curl.
Cultural Exploration
July to early October - dry days let you chase church choirs, kava circles and the Heilala Festival without dashing for cover.
Adventure & Hiking
June and August - cool mornings (19 °C) make the coastal cliffs and 'Eua rainforest tracks far less sweaty.
Budget Travel
February and March - accommodation drops to low-season rates; brief, heavy bursts of rain mean you'll get wet but you'll also get deals.

Skip These Items
Heavy denim - takes days to dry and mould loves it. More than one pair of jeans - locals reserve long pants for funerals. Expensive DSLR underwater housing - Tonga's operators rent tested gear cheaply. Formal heels - flagstones and sand will shred them. Sun-blocked snorkel mask with prescription lenses - reef opticians can glue inserts same-day for less than the excess baggage fee.
